New Delhi: Following a crushing defeat in the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections, the Congress party has begun a serious introspection over the performance of its student wing, the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI). According to sources, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has expressed strong displeasure over the results and demanded a comprehensive review of the electoral debacle.
The NSUI failed to secure a single position in the highly contested four-member DUSU panel. The rival Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) clinched three key posts—President, Secretary, and Joint Secretary. Adding insult to injury, the Vice President’s post was won by Deepanshu Shaukeen, an independent candidate and an NSUI rebel who was notably denied an official ticket by the party.
Sources indicate that Rahul Gandhi has directed Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal to submit a detailed fact-finding report within a week, analyzing the root causes of the loss. The scrutiny is expected to focus heavily on the controversial ticket distribution process and suspected internal sabotage. The outcome has placed NSUI’s national in-charge, Kanhaiya Kumar, and its president, Vinod Jakhar, squarely in the line of fire.
Party insiders describe the defeat as a massive “self-goal,” pointing out that the NSUI squandered a highly favorable campus atmosphere. In the run-up to the polls, Congress had aggressively campaigned on pressing student issues, including the NEET paper leak controversy, unemployment, and recent infrastructure tragedies affecting students in Delhi.
The denial of a ticket to Deepanshu Shaukeen, who enjoyed substantial grassroots support for his active role during a recent building collapse tragedy in Satya Niketan, is being widely cited as a fatal strategic error. Shaukeen’s massive victory margin of over 13,000 votes as an independent candidate exposed the disconnect between the student wing’s leadership and its ground reality. Another strong NSUI aspirant, Vishesh Yadav, who was also overlooked for a ticket, contested independently and secured more votes than the official NSUI candidate for the Joint Secretary post.
The DUSU election results represent a significant setback for the Congress party’s ongoing efforts to mobilize the youth vote nationwide. As the internal review proceeds, sweeping organizational changes and strict disciplinary actions against key office-bearers are highly anticipated in the coming days.
