New Delhi: Tensions in the Black Sea have escalated dramatically following an attack on a commercial vessel carrying four Indian sailors at the Odesa port of Ukraine on Saturday. According to the Indian Embassy in Kyiv, two crew members aboard the MV AGN Ragnar are safe, while the status of the remaining two is currently unknown.
The incident marks the second strike involving Indian seafarers in just one week, heightening concerns over the safety of neutral maritime workers navigating the active conflict zone. The Indian mission in Kyiv stated that it is closely monitoring the situation on the ground. Odesa, one of the most vital Black Sea ports for Ukraine, has been repeatedly targeted since the onset of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine in 2022.
This latest strike comes merely days after a separate Russian attack on the Odesa port claimed the lives of four Indian sailors. In a firm diplomatic response to the previous casualty, India summoned the highest ranking Russian diplomat to lodge a strong protest against the loss of civilian lives.
In light of the rapidly deteriorating maritime security environment, the Ministry of External Affairs has issued a comprehensive safety advisory for Indian citizens deployed on ships operating in the Black Sea region. The government noted that the dangers have compounded over the past few months. According to an official ministry statement, there has been a concerning spike in attacks on commercial vessels since April, resulting in the tragic deaths of five Indian nationals overall.
“Commercial ships operating in or transiting through these areas are facing major security threats, including missile and drone attacks,” the official advisory stated.
The ministry has strongly urged all seafarers looking to work in the Black Sea corridor to exercise extreme caution. Before taking up assignments, sailors have been advised to demand complete transparency from their employers, recruitment agencies, and ship operators. The advisory mandates that workers verify critical details, including the exact maritime route, scheduled port halts, onboard security arrangements, insurance coverage, and emergency evacuation protocols.
As the conflict continues to disrupt global shipping lanes, the immediate priority for New Delhi remains the safe retrieval of the two missing crew members and the broader protection of its large seafaring diaspora.
