Lucknow: Despite securing a victory in the recent Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is grappling with a significant setback in Uttar Pradesh (UP), prompting a series of meetings to address the poor performance. The UP State Working Committee is convening today, with BJP National President JP Nadda in attendance, to discuss the election defeat, upcoming by-elections, and strategies for the 2027 state assembly elections.
The meeting is being held at the auditorium of Ram Manohar Lohia Law University in Lucknow, where JP Nadda will deliver the keynote address. Key figures including Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brijesh Pathak, along with central ministers and state government officials, are present.
In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the BJP’s seats in UP dropped significantly from 62 in 2019 to 33 in 2024, with an 8.50 per cent decrease in vote share. This decline has led to ongoing reviews and strategic discussions within the party. The meeting’s agenda includes analysing the election results, planning for by-elections, and mapping out the approach for the 2027 assembly elections.
State President Bhupendra Chaudhary will initiate the meeting, followed by State General Secretary Anup Gupta presenting the political proposal. General Secretaries Amarpal Maurya and Sanjay Rai will support this proposal, which aims to review the election, outline future strategies, and address the spread of misinformation by the opposition during the elections. Additionally, the proposal will celebrate the formation of the Modi government for the third time and discuss ways to counter opposition narratives about constitutional changes and reservation policies.
Organisation General Secretary Dharampal will lead discussions on campaigns aimed at engaging voters more effectively. The primary focus of today’s meeting is the preparations for the upcoming by-elections in 10 state seats and the 2027 assembly elections. Recent by-election results from 13 seats in 7 states have further alarmed the party, highlighting the need for stronger electoral strategies.
Out of the 10 by-election seats in UP, 5 were held by the Samajwadi Party and 3 by the BJP. The BJP aims not only to retain its seats but also to challenge the Samajwadi Party’s strongholds.
In response to the reduced number of seats in the Lok Sabha elections, there have been viral statements from some party MLAs, former MPs, and workers. Sources indicate that the Working Committee meeting will monitor such outspoken members closely. State officials have been instructed to prevent any controversial statements or messages during the meeting, and all attendees have been advised to refrain from making media statements. Specific individuals have been assigned the responsibility of ensuring adherence to this directive.
