Chennai: Tamil Nadu politics witnessed dramatic developments ahead of the crucial Assembly floor test, with reports suggesting that the AIADMK is staring at a possible split after a faction within the party signalled support for Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s government.
The political uncertainty comes just days after Vijay, founder of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), took oath as the Chief Minister following a fractured mandate in the 2026 Assembly elections. Though TVK emerged as the single-largest party, it initially fell short of the majority mark and depended on support from allies and smaller parties to form the government.
According to sources, a section of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) led by senior leaders C.V. Shanmugam, S.P. Velumani and C. Vijayabaskar is reportedly inclined towards backing the Vijay-led government during the Assembly floor test. The move has intensified speculation of a major internal split within the opposition party.
Reports also claimed that under a possible new political arrangement, leaders from the Shanmugam camp could be accommodated in the state cabinet. However, neither the AIADMK leadership nor the TVK government has officially confirmed any such negotiations so far.
The latest developments have created fresh ripples in Tamil Nadu politics, especially within the NDA framework, as sections of the AIADMK appear divided over future political strategy and ties with the BJP.
Political observers believe the upcoming floor test may not only determine the stability of Vijay’s government but could also shape the future direction and leadership battle within the AIADMK.
