Bhubaneswar: After Odisha Rasagola and Kandhamal Haladi, the state government has initiated steps for Geographical indication (GI) tag for Chhena Poda and silver Filigree.
According to sources, the Odisha Small Industries Corporation Limited (OSIC) of Odisha government held discussions with members of Utkal Mistarna Byabasayee Sangh, Mahaveer South Indian of Nayagarh and jewellers’ association of Cuttack in this regard.
Chhena Poda
Literally meaning burnt cheese, Chhena Poda is Odisha’s signature dessert. The cheese dessert is said to have originated in Nayagarh in the first half of the twentieth century quite accidentally when Sudarshana Sahoo, owner of a confectionery, added sugar and seasonings to leftover cheese and put in an oven that was still warm one night. It is also offered to Lord Jagannath in Puri.
Tarakasi
Filigree or Cuttack Tarakasi work is known for its delicate artistry and brilliant craftsmanship. Hundreds of households in Cuttack are engaged in making this kind of silver jewellery with beaten silver drawn into fine wires and foils. During Durga Puja in Odisha, Tarakasi jewellery is used at many pandals to embellish the idols. Odissi dancers also don them.
