New Delhi: The government is likely to table the Bill to ban Triple Talaq for discussion and passage in Lok Sabha on Thursday. The proposed law criminalises instant divorce by Muslim men and seeks jail term for the guilty.
The ruling BJP has issued a whip to its MPs, asking them to be present in the lower house for the voting. This is the first draft legislation tabled by the Narendra Modi government after it won a second term in May.
However, Opposition parties like Naveen Patnaik’s BJD, Congress and its allies, Andhra Pradesh’s YSR Congress and Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress will oppose the Bill in parliament. They demand that the Bill must first be sent to a parliamentary committee for further discussion. Even BJP ally Nitish Kumar has said his Janata Dal United will oppose it.
