Detroit: Democrat lawmaker Ranjeev Puri has scripted history by becoming the first Indian-American and Sikh-American to be elected as the Speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives. Following the Democratic Party’s success in reclaiming the House majority during the 2026 United States midterm elections, the 42-year-old legislator was chosen by his colleagues to lead the chamber for the 2027-2028 legislative term.

Puri, whose parents immigrated to the US from Punjab, succeeds Republican Matt Hall in the prominent leadership role. Taking to Facebook to announce his election on Thursday, Puri expressed his gratitude towards his fellow lawmakers. “Today, I’m humbled to be elected by my colleagues as Speaker of the Michigan House,” he wrote, adding, “Thank you to my colleagues for your trust. Excited to get to work”. He also affirmed his commitment to collaborating with Senate Majority Leader-elect Darrin Camilleri and Governor-elect Jocelyn Benson to effectively deliver on the party’s campaign promises.

Before cementing his position in state politics, Puri worked on former President Barack Obama’s election campaigns and built a robust career in Michigan’s automotive sector. He holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. First elected to the state House in 2020, Puri steadily climbed the legislative ranks and previously served as the House Minority Leader in 2025.

His historic appointment has drawn widespread praise from the South Asian diaspora. Chintan Patel, executive director of the advocacy organisation Indian American Impact, commended Puri’s elevation. Patel noted that Puri’s leadership will be crucial in tackling pressing issues, particularly in reducing healthcare and housing costs for local residents. “With Ranjeev leading the caucus, we have no doubt they will lower costs and make life more affordable for Michigan families,” Patel remarked, highlighting expectations that Puri will stand as a strong voice for minority communities amid rising concerns over hate crimes.

Puri’s milestone aligns with a broader wave of political achievements for the Indian-American community following the November elections. Alongside his appointment, candidates like Suhas Subramanyam, Pia Dandiya, Aparna Raj, and Jyot Singh successfully secured legislative positions across various states, further reflecting the growing influence of the diaspora in American governance.
