New Delhi: Lakhs of Central government employees and pensioners across the country are facing an extended wait for their anticipated festive bonus. The much-awaited Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) hike for the July-December 2026 half-year cycle was widely expected to be announced during the Union Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, October 21. However, the meeting concluded without any official declaration on the matter, leaving employees disappointed during the Dussehra season.

With the October 21 meeting passing without a decision, all eyes are now firmly set on the next Cabinet gathering. Historically, the Central government holds its routine Cabinet meetings on Wednesdays, making October 28 the next highly anticipated date for a potential announcement. While the government retains the flexibility to convene meetings on other days or multiple times a week if required, employees will have to exercise patience for at least a few more days.

Delays in DA announcements are not entirely unprecedented. Earlier this year, the hike for the January 2026 cycle was announced over a month late, eventually being cleared on April 18 and bumping the allowance to 60 per cent. While previous delays were occasionally attributed to structural adjustments in aligning new salary frameworks with inflation data, pension experts suggest that the current hold-up is primarily due to routine administrative paperwork and procedural clearances.

Once announced, the DA hike is expected to bring substantial financial relief. Revisions to the Dearness Allowance are calculated using a fixed formula based on the 12-month average of the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW). As the required data for the July 2026 cycle is already complete, financial experts project a robust 3 to 4 per cent increase. This adjustment would elevate the current DA rate from 60 per cent to 63 or 64 per cent.

The prospective hike will reflect directly in the monthly take-home pay of government staff. For instance, an employee with a minimum basic salary of ₹18,000 can expect a monthly increment ranging between ₹360 and ₹540. Similarly, those drawing a basic pay of ₹29,200 will likely see their monthly salaries rise by ₹584 to ₹876. Now, the nationwide workforce eagerly awaits the official government seal of approval to reap the benefits of the revised allowance.
