New Delhi: The legal battle surrounding the recent arrest of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders Sourav Das and Ashutosh Ranka has escalated, with a plea for their release now filed in the Delhi High Court. The petition formally challenges the recent order issued by the Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) Court, which extended the police custody of the two leaders.

The petitioners have requested an urgent hearing from the High Court, hoping to secure immediate relief for Das and Ranka. The High Court’s stance on this matter is considered crucial, as the petition directly questions the validity of the SEM Court’s decision to prolong their detention.

The controversy began on October 13 when Delhi Police arrested Das and Ranka. According to police reports, the CJP leaders allegedly entered a restricted protest area at Jantar Mantar illegally. Furthermore, law enforcement officials have accused the duo of violating the conditions of a previously established bond.

Following their arrest, the leaders were presented before the court. On Monday, the SEM Court reviewed the police’s allegations and subsequently ordered an extension of their custody by two additional days, keeping them detained until October 21.

It is this specific extension order that forms the basis of the current challenge in the High Court. The primary objective of the petition is to secure the swift release of the CJP leaders, although it remains unclear whether the High Court will grant immediate relief prior to a full hearing.

All eyes are now on the Delhi High Court to see when it will schedule the hearing and what decision it will ultimately deliver. The court is expected to carefully examine the issues raised in the petition, as well as the arguments presented by both the petitioners and the Delhi Police. The future course of this legal dispute will become apparent only after the High Court initiates its proceedings.
