Bhubaneswar: Following a tragic and shocking incident where five members of a family reportedly lost their lives after consuming noodles before bed, health experts are raising serious concerns about the widespread consumption of instant noodles and foods made from refined flour (maida). While the exact cause of the family’s sudden death remains under active investigation, the unfortunate event has sparked a much-needed conversation about the silent, long-term health risks lurking in our favourite fast foods.
In today’s fast-paced world, children and adults alike are increasingly dependent on instant meals. According to health and nutrition experts, everyday staples like noodles, pasta, macaroni, bread, and burgers are predominantly made from refined flour. “Maida is originally derived from wheat, but the intense refining process strips away almost all essential nutrients, leaving it completely devoid of dietary fibre, vitamins, and proteins,” experts note. Furthermore, harmful bleaching agents frequently used to give refined flour its signature bright, white texture make it highly detrimental to human health.
Health professionals emphasize that instant noodles pose a uniquely severe threat. Besides being entirely maida-based, they are heavily loaded with sodium and artificial preservatives to dramatically increase their shelf life. The accompanying tastemaker packets are also known to contain various chemical additives that can negatively impact the body over time.
The immediate toll of this diet is primarily seen in the gut. The severe lack of dietary fibre makes these refined foods incredibly difficult to digest, frequently leading to gastrointestinal issues such as chronic constipation, bloating, and a persistent feeling of heaviness in the stomach. Additionally, the high-calorie, zero-nutrition profile of noodles leaves consumers feeling hungry shortly after a meal, which inherently promotes overeating and rapid, unhealthy weight gain.
However, the long-term risks are even more alarming. Prolonged consumption of refined flour can lead to severe metabolic complications. Due to their extremely high glycemic index, maida-based foods cause rapid and sudden spikes in blood sugar levels. Medical professionals warn that this sudden surge forces the pancreas to overproduce insulin, eventually paving the way for insulin resistance and type-2 diabetes. Over time, the combination of nutrient deficiency, chronic internal inflammation, and sugar spikes associated with refined grains significantly elevates the risk of life-threatening cardiovascular diseases.
While an occasional indulgence might not be immediately dangerous, nutritionists strongly advise against making instant noodles a daily dietary habit in order to protect overall long-term well-being.
