Hosted in the national capital, the high-profile gathering is being widely viewed not merely as a diplomatic conclave, but as a stark reflection of a rapidly shifting global power structure.
A central theme dominating the summit’s agenda is the strategic push for ‘de-dollarization’. While member nations are not aiming to completely eradicate the United States dollar overnight, the overarching objective is to significantly reduce international dependency on it. To achieve this, the bloc is actively brainstorming mechanisms to boost bilateral and multilateral trade using domestic currencies. Under this proposed framework, cross-border trade settlements would increasingly rely on the Indian Rupee, the Russian Ruble, the Chinese Yuan, and the currencies of other member nations.
India has remained a vocal advocate for this financial transition. The core question before the delegates is how to build a robust payment system capable of effectively countering the dollar’s monopoly. Discussions suggest that the bloc might explore a dedicated gold-backed asset or a digital currency exclusively designed for BRICS nations. Furthermore, the New Development Bank (NDB), which already funds major infrastructural projects across member states, is expected to be entrusted with the regulatory oversight of this new financial ecosystem.
Amidst these heavy economic deliberations, bilateral diplomacy also took center stage. On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a highly anticipated meeting at the Bharat Mandapam. Displaying their familiar camaraderie, the two leaders exchanged a warm hug before sitting down for strategic talks.
Adding a touch of cultural diplomacy to the geopolitical dialogue, Prime Minister Modi presented President Putin with a Russian translation of the revered Tamil literary classic, the Tirukkural. Speaking on the significance of the text, Prime Minister Modi noted that the book “will play a key role in enhancing cultural relations between India and Russia.”
As the summit progresses, the underlying message emanating from the BRICS platform is unmistakable. With robust alternative economic systems in the pipeline and deepening ties among eastern giants, the global community is receiving a clear signal: the world will no longer operate under a single power center.
