New Delhi: In a historic development for Indian football, the Blue Tigers are set to cross paths with Panama for the very first time. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has officially confirmed that India will host the Central American nation in an international friendly on September 26. This crucial fixture has been strategically scheduled as a rigorous preparatory test ahead of India’s highly anticipated blockbuster clash against five-time world champions Brazil on October 3.
Panama, currently sitting at a formidable 44th in the FIFA world rankings, brings top-tier international pedigree to the matchup. Known as Los Canaleros, the team recently competed in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they battled against footballing heavyweights England, Croatia, and Ghana in the group stages. For India, this encounter represents a rare and invaluable opportunity, as Panama becomes only the ninth team from the CONCACAF region to ever face the national squad.
The September 26 friendly kicks off a demanding yet transformative window for head coach Khalid Jamil and his squad. It marks the first of four upcoming matches against nations that featured in this summer’s World Cup. Following the Panama and Brazil fixtures, the Indian team is scheduled to play a double-header against New Zealand on November 12 and November 15. Additionally, reports suggest the AIFF is in active talks to secure another friendly against Cabo Verde on October 6, immediately following the Brazil match.
Facilitating this ambitious slate of high-profile games required significant logistical maneuvering. The AIFF recently confirmed India’s withdrawal from the upcoming FIFA ASEAN Cup to avoid a direct scheduling conflict. The regional tournament was slated to begin on September 24, with its final scheduled for October 3—the exact same day India is set to host Brazil at Kolkata’s iconic Salt Lake Stadium. Had India advanced to the ASEAN Cup final, the overlapping commitments would have created an unavoidable crisis.
Speaking on the strategic shift, AIFF Deputy General Secretary M Satyanarayan highlighted the immense value of facing seasoned, world-class opponents.
“Playing against Panama will be a tough battle ahead of the Brazil game,” Satyanarayan explained. “Panama are a top-50 team in the world, and it will be a good test for Khalid Jamil’s boys. We are looking forward to our players getting the right exposure, and we normally don’t get to play such World Cup teams. So it’s a good FIFA window for us, where we are playing such tough teams.”
