Washington: US President Donald Trump’s popularity has suffered a significant blow, with his approval rating plunging to 33%—the lowest point of his current term.
According to a recently concluded four-day Reuters/Ipsos poll, a staggering 64% of respondents expressed disapproval of the President’s performance in the White House. Only 33% approved of his governance, reflecting a two-point drop from the 35% approval rating recorded by Reuters/Ipsos earlier this month.
The sharp decline in public approval is heavily attributed to mounting anxiety over a prolonged US-Iran conflict. The President’s popularity took a major hit earlier this year when he ordered joint military strikes on Iran alongside Israel. Tensions between Washington and Tehran have simmered for an extended period, with no diplomatic agreement in sight.
The geopolitical standoff has disrupted roughly a fifth of the world’s oil trade, leading to a surge in global petrol prices. This economic fallout has directly impacted American households, adding to the administration’s political woes as voters grapple with the financial repercussions of the conflict.
During his election campaign, Trump pledged to keep inflation in check and avoid dragging the United States into long-lasting foreign wars. At the onset of the current conflict, the President had assured the public that the confrontation with Iran would be resolved within a matter of weeks. However, the situation escalated, defying those initial assurances. Polls now indicate that a vast majority of Americans fear the conflict could drag on indefinitely.
Although immediate military tensions between the US and Iran have cooled recently, oil transit through the strategic Strait of Hormuz remains constrained, keeping energy prices elevated. The combination of stalled negotiations, economic strain on voters, and unfulfilled campaign promises has culminated in a massive drop in the President’s overall popularity, anchoring his approval at a term low of 33%.
