Tehran: Amid escalating tensions with the United States, Iran has signaled a major shift in its military posture. Senior officials from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have warned that Tehran’s strategy, which has historically been defensive, could soon pivot to an aggressive, offensive approach if provoked.
The heightened rhetoric follows indications that any US ground operations or attempts to breach Iranian territory will be met with severe retaliation. Brigadier General Yadollah Javani, head of the IRGC’s political bureau, categorically stated that while Iran’s past actions were primarily defensive, future confrontations may look drastically different. He cautioned adversaries to brace for a “strategic surprise.”
This strategic pivot coincides with the expiration of a critical June agreement and lingering volatility surrounding the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Recent remarks by US President Donald Trump, suggesting the US could declare Hormuz as its own territory, have further strained relations. Although the White House later downplayed the comments as a joke, Tehran has treated the assertion with utmost seriousness.
While General Javani did not detail the exact nature of the anticipated offensive, IRGC spokesperson Hossein Mohebbi issued a stark warning. He stated that if Washington targets Iranian civilian infrastructure, Iran and its regional allies are prepared to strike US energy networks, power plants, and critical internet infrastructure. Meanwhile, Iranian hardline factions and domestic media are openly discussing potential strikes on US interests in neighboring Bahrain and Kuwait. However, geopolitical analysts remain skeptical about the practical execution and massive risks associated with such cross-border operations, especially given the lack of any recent confirmation regarding an impending US ground campaign.
In response to the friction, Iran has heavily fortified its rapid-response naval units around the Strait of Hormuz. Authorities have made it clear that any attempt by US forces to land on Iranian islands will trigger an immediate, targeted response. Significant security upgrades have also been implemented at vital oil export hubs, including the critical Kharg Island.
Simultaneously, Tehran noted that keeping the Strait of Hormuz entirely open hinges on the US honoring its commitments. While maritime route negotiations with Oman are currently ongoing, legal and technical complexities have delayed a final agreement.
While an immediate, unprovoked Iranian ground assault on US targets remains highly unlikely, Tehran’s latest declarations send a clear message: the Islamic Republic is keeping both its defensive shields and offensive arsenal fully primed for action.
