New Delhi: As India grapples with a surging cancer burden, a pivotal shift toward early detection and advanced technology is emerging as the primary defense. NITI Aayog is currently developing a comprehensive imaging biobank containing radiology and pathology data of over 20000 patients. This initiative aims to train artificial intelligence tools for faster and more accurate diagnosis.

The current landscape paints a grim picture for patients and healthcare providers. Every day, major hospitals witness a tragic reality where over 70 percent of cancer patients arrive at an advanced stage. According to a recent American Cancer Society report, India recorded 1.53 million new cancer cases and 874000 related deaths in 2024. Alarmingly, while cases rose by 10.4 percent between 2015 and 2024, the mortality rate surged by 28.6 percent. Statistics indicate that one in nine Indians faces a lifetime risk of developing the disease, with the risk exceeding 20 percent in several northeastern states.

Dr J B Sharma, Director at Action Cancer Hospital and Action Institute of Medical Oncology and Immunotherapy in Delhi, points out that delayed diagnosis is the root cause of high mortality and financial ruin. He notes that the five year survival rate for lung cancer in India stands at a mere four percent compared to 33 percent in Japan. He adds that treatment expenses financially devastate over 75 percent of affected families.

To combat this crisis, medical experts advocate for a clear strategy. The first step involves integrating health and lifestyle education into school curriculums to instill preventive habits early. The second measure promotes the three week rule, urging individuals to consult a doctor if any physical symptom persists beyond three weeks.

The most significant development is the introduction of the Multi Cancer Early Detection test. This revolutionary blood test can identify biological signals of ten different cancers from a single sample. In July 2026, Apollo Cancer Centers introduced the Shield Multi Cancer Detection test for individuals aged 45 and above. Zydus Lifesciences has partnered with Apollo Hospitals to make this diagnostic tool accessible nationwide.

For a nation of 1.4 billion people, experts believe a layered approach is essential. Combining community health workers, digital risk assessments, artificial intelligence diagnostics, and mobile screening units can create a robust healthcare framework. This comprehensive strategy will ultimately save millions of lives through timely medical intervention.
