Washington: Tensions in the Middle East have escalated sharply as the United States military carried out air strikes on Iran for a tenth consecutive night. The US Central Command stated that the continuous bombardment aims to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and dismantle Iranian military infrastructure used to target commercial shipping in the region.
The latest wave of military action follows the death of another American soldier and recent Iranian strikes on US allies Kuwait, Jordan, and Bahrain. Bahrain notably hosts the United States Navy Fifth Fleet. American forces have actively targeted Iranian military command centers, air defense systems, coastal surveillance facilities, missile and drone launch sites, and communication networks. Last week, US forces also destroyed bridges and a tower at an Iranian port.
The previous interim agreement to halt hostilities has completely collapsed. Commercial shipping through the critical Strait of Hormuz has largely stopped. Adding to the crisis, Iran backed rebels in Yemen have threatened to block Saudi Arabian vessels in the Red Sea, putting massive pressure on an alternative oil export route.
The economic impact is already visible across global energy markets. Benchmark Brent crude traded above 88 dollars per barrel on Monday. In the United States, gasoline prices averaged around 4 dollars per gallon, putting financial strain on citizens ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
Tragic casualties have been reported on both sides. The US military identified two soldiers killed during recent attacks in Jordan, while a third remains missing. Additionally, an American soldier died in Iraq on Saturday during a controlled demolition of a downed Iranian drone.
Taking to social media, President Donald Trump delivered a stern warning, stating that Iran would pay a heavy price whenever an American soldier is killed. He was scheduled to attend a solemn transfer ceremony at Dover Air Force Base on Tuesday evening to receive the remains of a fallen soldier.
On the ground, Iranian state news agency IRNA reported at least one casualty near the northwestern city of Tabriz, located about 520 kilometers from Tehran. This area is known for housing underground missile bases operated by the Revolutionary Guard. IRNA indicated that American strikes also hit Bandar Imam Khomeini in Khuzestan province, Sirik and Jask in Hormozgan province, alongside Konarak and Chabahar in Sistan and Baluchestan province.
Maritime security remains highly volatile. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported fresh attacks on commercial vessels near the coasts of the United Arab Emirates and Oman. In one incident, a ship caught fire after being struck by a projectile, forcing the crew to abandon the vessel.
Despite the heavy military engagement, a faint diplomatic opening has emerged. The Iranian Interior Minister recently traveled to Pakistan, a key regional mediator, keeping the possibility of a negotiated settlement alive amid the raging conflict.
