New Delhi: The highly anticipated 72nd National Film Awards were officially announced on Saturday to honour the finest cinematic achievements of 2024. In a major celebration of talent across the nation, Kartik Aaryan and Mammootty shared the prestigious Best Actor award for their phenomenal performances in Chandu Champion and Bramayugam respectively. Yami Gautam took home the Best Actress honour for her powerful role in Article 370, which also bagged the coveted Best Feature Film title.
The awards evaluated movies that received Central Board of Film Certification clearance between January 1 and December 31 2024. A rigorous selection process was conducted by a special 11 member jury. Acclaimed filmmaker Jayaraj, who previously served on the 2012 panel, headed the high profile committee to carefully review entries from across the country and finalise this year’s winners.
Alongside the leading acting categories, Aanand L Rai secured Best Direction for Ekta Ka Pratik. Sanjay Mishra won Best Supporting Actor for Bhakshak while Sachana Namidass was named Best Supporting Actress for Maharaja. Child artists Riddhiman Banerjee, Tapomoy Deb and Gitashree Chakraborty were jointly recognised for Onko Ki Kothi. Acknowledging profound cinematic analysis, Sanjeev Srivastava was awarded Best Film Critic for his deep understanding of Hindi cinema.
