Islamabad: The Pakistan military leadership has strongly declared its resolution to take all necessary measures to secure the country’s designated water share under the Indus Waters Treaty. This significant statement followed a high level military conference chaired by Chief of Defence Forces General Asim Munir. The strict military response comes after India officially placed the historic 1960 water agreement in abeyance following the tragic April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.
The vital water sharing mechanism between the two neighbours has emerged as a major geopolitical flashpoint. Following the deadly assault on civilians in Jammu and Kashmir the Indian government adopted a stringent stance. New Delhi unequivocally stated that normal treaty obligations cannot continue while cross border terrorism persists. Consequently the Indian administration announced the temporary suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty demanding credible and irreversible action from Islamabad against militant networks.
Addressing the rising diplomatic tensions the Pakistan Army issued an official statement following the 276th Corps Commanders Conference. The top military brass expressed a resolute commitment to ensure the continuous availability of the rightful water share of the country. The military forum also heavily reaffirmed the previous guidance provided by the National Security Committee. Notably the national security body had previously warned that any direct attempt to stop or divert the river flow would be treated as an act of war.
Beyond the escalating water dispute the military leadership extensively reviewed the internal security environment. The forum expressed serious concerns regarding the continuous use of Afghan Taliban controlled territory by militant factions to launch violent attacks inside Pakistan. General Munir directed the armed forces to intensify their intelligence based operations under the ambit of Operation Ghazab lil Haq to strictly neutralize these external threats. The conference also reiterated the continued diplomatic and moral support for the Kashmiri people.
The current diplomatic standoff over the Indus basin highlights a precarious situation for regional stability. With India maintaining a firm position linking water diplomacy to strict counter terrorism actions and Pakistan threatening severe consequences any future resolution appears highly complex. Both nations continue to harden their respective positions drawing significant international attention to the fragile security dynamics of the region.
