Shimla: A moderate earthquake struck Himachal Pradesh late on Friday night, sending tremors across several districts and prompting residents to rush out of their homes as a precaution. Authorities said there were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage, though officials continued to monitor the situation. The earthquake measured around 5.0 on the Richter scale and was centred in the Chamba region of the state.

According to preliminary information from seismic monitoring agencies, the earthquake occurred at approximately 10:04 pm. The tremors were felt not only in Chamba district but also in neighbouring areas, including parts of Kangra, Dharamshala and the state capital Shimla. Residents reported experiencing strong shaking for several seconds, triggering panic in some localities.

Many people stepped out of their homes, hotels and commercial establishments as buildings and household items shook during the quake. Social media platforms were flooded with posts from residents across Himachal Pradesh and neighbouring regions confirming that they had felt the tremors. Some users from Chandigarh and nearby areas also reported experiencing mild shaking.

Officials said emergency response teams and local administrations were placed on alert immediately after the earthquake. District authorities in Chamba and adjoining regions began assessing the situation to determine whether any structural damage had occurred. Initial reports, however, suggested that there had been no significant loss of life or property.

Himachal Pradesh falls within a seismically active zone of the Himalayan region and experiences frequent earthquakes of varying intensity. Experts have repeatedly cautioned that the region remains vulnerable to moderate and major seismic events due to ongoing tectonic activity along the Himalayan fault system.

The latest earthquake has once again highlighted the need for disaster preparedness and adherence to earthquake safety measures. Authorities have advised residents to remain calm, avoid rumours and follow official updates in case of aftershocks.

As of late Friday night, no serious injuries or large scale destruction had been reported. Officials said surveillance and assessment efforts would continue through the night, while disaster management teams remained prepared to respond to any emergency situation arising from the tremor.
