Ranchi: The upcoming Rajya Sabha election in Jharkhand has triggered fresh political tensions within the ruling alliance, with differences between the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Congress creating uncertainty over candidate selection and potentially opening an opportunity for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in a high stakes contest.
The friction surfaced after the Congress announced senior party leader Pranav Jha as its Rajya Sabha candidate without an apparent consensus within the alliance. The move reportedly upset the JMM leadership, which subsequently declared that it would contest both Rajya Sabha seats from the state and authorised Chief Minister Hemant Soren to select the party’s candidates. The development has exposed visible cracks within the ruling coalition ahead of the election.
The Rajya Sabha election in Jharkhand has gained significance because two seats are up for grabs, one vacant following the demise of JMM founder Shibu Soren and the other due to the completion of BJP leader Deepak Prakash’s term. The Election Commission has already issued the notification for the polls.
Political observers believe the alliance arithmetic has become increasingly complex. The ruling bloc led by Chief Minister Hemant Soren currently enjoys a majority in the 81 member Assembly, but disagreements over seat sharing and candidate selection have created room for political manoeuvring. JMM is confident of securing one seat on its own strength, while the second seat has become the centre of intense negotiations.
Adding to the uncertainty, alliance partners such as the Rashtriya Janata Dal and CPI(ML) have publicly expressed dissatisfaction, claiming they were not consulted by either JMM or Congress regarding the Rajya Sabha strategy. Their support could prove crucial in a closely fought contest.
Sensing an opportunity, the BJP has decided to field a candidate despite not having sufficient numbers on its own. Party leaders have expressed confidence that cross voting or support from dissatisfied legislators could alter the outcome. BJP leaders are expected to announce their candidate shortly as political activity intensifies in Ranchi.
The election has also revived concerns about possible cross voting and political realignments. JMM leaders have cautioned against attempts at horse trading, while opposition leaders maintain that legislators are free to vote according to their conscience in Rajya Sabha elections.
With nomination deadlines approaching and alliance negotiations still unresolved, the Jharkhand Rajya Sabha contest is shaping up as one of the most closely watched political battles in the state this year. The final outcome could influence not only representation in Parliament but also the future dynamics of the ruling alliance in Jharkhand.
