Nagpu: A woman from West Bengal has alleged that she was subjected to an attempt at forced religious conversion, wrongful confinement, assault and threats at a dargah in Maharashtra’s Nagpur district, leading to the arrest of three persons and the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case.
According to police officials, the incident is linked to the Amma Dargah located in the Old Kamptee area of Nagpur district. The complainant, a resident of West Bengal, had reportedly travelled to Nagpur to participate in the annual Urs festival held at the shrine. Investigators said she had been visiting the dargah regularly over the past few years.
In her complaint, the woman alleged that she was confined at the shrine and pressured to convert her religion. She claimed that when she resisted, she was assaulted, molested and threatened with dire consequences. The woman further alleged that an attempt was made on her life before she managed to escape and return to West Bengal.
After reaching Kolkata, the woman lodged a complaint with the Dum Dum police. Since the alleged incident occurred within the jurisdiction of Kanhan police station in Nagpur district, a Zero FIR was registered and subsequently transferred to Maharashtra Police for further investigation.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case against six individuals under various provisions related to assault, molestation, attempted murder and alleged forced religious conversion. Three accused have been arrested so far, including the dargah’s administrator Tanviruddin Kalimuddin, his son Mustafizuddin Tanviruddin and another accused identified as Tejas Khobragade. Efforts are underway to trace the remaining accused named in the FIR.
Given the seriousness of the allegations, Nagpur Rural Police Superintendent Harssh A. Poddar has constituted a seven member Special Investigation Team headed by Additional Superintendent of Police Anil Mhaske. The SIT has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive investigation into all aspects of the case.
Police officials said electronic devices and other evidence are being examined as part of the investigation. Authorities have maintained that the probe is being carried out impartially and that all allegations made by the complainant will be thoroughly verified.
The case has drawn significant public attention due to the serious nature of the accusations. Investigators are expected to question additional witnesses and examine documentary and forensic evidence before filing a detailed report.
