New Delhi: India is preparing for a significant round of missile testing in the Bay of Bengal between June 4 and June 9, with multiple Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) and maritime warnings issued for designated zones off the eastern coast. The development has drawn attention from defence observers and strategic analysts, who view it as part of India’s continuing efforts to strengthen its military capabilities and strategic deterrence.
According to official notifications, a large no fly zone has been established around the Integrated Test Range on Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast. The restricted area is reported to extend approximately 390 kilometres, indicating preparations for a potential long range missile trial during the notified period.
A separate warning has also been issued by the Indian Navy’s Eastern Naval Command based in Visakhapatnam. The advisory covers a substantial stretch of the Bay of Bengal from June 7 to June 9 and suggests possible weapons or missile related activities involving naval assets. The notified maritime zone reportedly extends around 470 kilometres into the sea.
While authorities have not disclosed the specific missile systems involved, defence experts note that India has significantly accelerated testing and development of strategic weapons in recent years. The country’s missile inventory includes the Agni series of ballistic missiles, submarine launched systems such as the K 4 missile, and advanced hypersonic weapons currently under development.
The latest notifications follow a series of missile related activities conducted over the Bay of Bengal in recent months. In May, India had issued similar NOTAMs for long range missile tests, leading to widespread speculation regarding the testing of advanced strategic systems. However, defence authorities have consistently maintained operational secrecy regarding such exercises until official announcements are made.
A NOTAM is a formal aviation notice issued when authorities need to restrict civilian air traffic in specific areas due to potentially hazardous activities.
