Kolkata: Political temperatures in West Bengal have risen sharply following claims by former Trinamool Congress leader Ritabrata Banerjee that a large section of the ruling party’s legislators is unhappy with the current leadership. The allegations have fuelled speculation about possible internal discontent within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), even as the party leadership has not officially responded to the claims.
The controversy erupted after Banerjee alleged that as many as 58 TMC MLAs were dissatisfied and prepared to rebel against the party leadership. He further claimed that several legislators were in touch with him and supported the idea of political change within the organisation. The statements have triggered intense debate in the state’s political circles, particularly because they come ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
Despite the seriousness of the allegations, Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee has so far not publicly commented on the claims.
