Bengaluru: Senior Congress leader B.K. Hariprasad has been appointed as the new president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), marking a significant organisational reshuffle in the party’s Karnataka unit. The decision comes at a crucial time as the Congress government in the state seeks to strengthen its political and organisational position ahead of future electoral challenges.

Hariprasad, a veteran Congress leader and a member of the party’s national leadership circle, succeeds D.K. Shivakumar, who is widely credited with playing a key role in the Congress victory in the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections. The appointment is being viewed as part of the party’s broader strategy to balance governance responsibilities with organisational management.

A seasoned politician with decades of experience, Hariprasad has held several important positions within the Congress and has been closely associated with the party’s central leadership. Known for his organisational skills and political acumen, he has previously served in the Rajya Sabha and played a prominent role in party affairs at both the state and national levels.

The leadership change comes amid continuing discussions within Karnataka Congress regarding the distribution of responsibilities among senior leaders. Following the formation of the Congress government under Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, there has been persistent speculation about organisational restructuring aimed at strengthening the party ahead of local body elections and future Assembly contests.

Party insiders believe Hariprasad’s appointment could help improve coordination between the government and the organisation while addressing factional concerns within the state unit. The Congress leadership has repeatedly emphasised the need for unity and collective functioning to maintain the momentum gained after returning to power in Karnataka.

Political observers see the move as an attempt by the Congress high command to ensure that the party’s organisational machinery remains active and focused while senior leaders in government concentrate on administration and implementation of welfare programmes.

The appointment has generated considerable interest in Karnataka’s political circles, with both supporters and opponents closely watching how Hariprasad shapes the party’s strategy in the coming months. His immediate priorities are expected to include strengthening grassroots networks, preparing for upcoming elections, and ensuring greater coordination among party workers across the state.

As Karnataka remains one of the Congress party’s most important strongholds in the country, Hariprasad’s tenure as KPCC chief is likely to play a significant role in shaping the party’s political future in the state and beyond.
