Ahmedabad: Rajasthan Royals’ teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi scripted history in IPL 2026 by clinching the prestigious Orange Cap at just 15 years of age, becoming the youngest player ever to finish as the tournament’s highest run scorer.

The left handed batter enjoyed a dream season and ended the campaign with a staggering 776 runs in 16 matches, leaving behind established stars such as Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill and opening partner Sai Sudharsan in the race for the Orange Cap.

Sooryavanshi’s fearless batting became one of the biggest talking points of the season. With an extraordinary strike rate of 237.31, the Rajasthan Royals youngster consistently dominated opposition bowling attacks and played a major role in taking his team deep into the tournament.

Despite Rajasthan Royals falling short of a place in the final after their defeat against Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2, Sooryavanshi remained at the top of the batting charts. Gill and Sudharsan were the only players with a realistic chance of overtaking him during the IPL 2026 final, but both Gujarat batters failed to score heavily, ensuring that the teenager finished the season as the leading run scorer.

The achievement is even more remarkable considering the level of competition in this year’s tournament. Sooryavanshi outperformed some of the biggest names in world cricket, including Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Heinrich Klaasen. His maturity, aggressive stroke play and consistency drew praise from several cricketing greats throughout the season.

Earlier, Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill had described Sooryavanshi as the “best batter in the world right now” after the youngster’s match winning performances in the playoffs. The praise reflected the impact the Rajasthan Royals prodigy made during a record breaking campaign.

The Orange Cap remains one of the most prestigious individual honours in IPL history and carries a prize money of Rs 10 lakh. Over the years, legends such as David Warner, Chris Gayle, Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli have won the award. By adding his name to that elite list at the age of 15, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has announced himself as one of the brightest talents in Indian cricket.

While Rajasthan Royals may have missed out on the title, IPL 2026 will be remembered as the season of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a young batter whose fearless approach and record breaking numbers captured the imagination of cricket fans across the country.
