New Delhi: A public interest litigation has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking legal action against an organisation calling itself the “Cockroach Janta Party”, over allegations that it has misused oral observations made in court for publicity, commercial gain and social media mobilisation. The petition has also sought an independent investigation into alleged fake advocates practising with forged educational documents.
According to the report, the plea claims that the organisation has presented itself as a political outfit and has allegedly used courtroom remarks, judicial expressions and court related references in a manner that could affect the dignity of the judiciary. The petitioner has argued that statements made during court proceedings should not be turned into material for promotion, business activity or digital campaigns.
The petition says that using court observations for political or commercial messaging may create an unhealthy precedent. It has also raised concerns that such activity could damage public confidence in the judicial process and blur the line between legal discourse and publicity driven campaigns.
Another serious issue raised in the PIL relates to alleged fake advocates. The petitioner has claimed that some people are working in the legal profession on the basis of fake degrees and forged academic records. The plea has said that the presence of such individuals in the legal system can raise questions over the credibility and integrity of judicial institutions.
The petition has sought an independent probe into the entire matter and has asked that an agency such as the Central Bureau of Investigation be directed to examine the allegations. It has argued that only an impartial investigation can bring out the truth and determine whether court related material has been misused in organised digital or commercial activity.
The matter is now expected to draw legal and public attention, particularly because it involves two sensitive issues: the sanctity of court proceedings and the credibility of those practising law. As of now, the next step will depend on how the Supreme Court proceeds with the petition.
While the allegations remain subject to judicial scrutiny, the case has opened a wider debate on whether court observations can be used outside the courtroom for publicity and whether stronger checks are needed to protect the legal profession from fraud and misrepresentation.
