Is Drinking ORS Daily In Summer Safe? Doctors Explain The Right Use

New Delhi: As temperatures rise across India, many people turn to Oral Rehydration Solution, commonly known as ORS, to protect themselves from dehydration. But doctors caution that drinking ORS repeatedly without need may not be healthy for everyone.

ORS is a scientifically prepared mix of water, glucose and salts. It is mainly used to prevent or treat dehydration caused by diarrhoea, vomiting, excessive sweating or heat related fluid loss. The World Health Organization describes ORS as a simple and effective glucose electrolyte solution used to treat dehydration in people of all age groups, especially during diarrhoeal illness.

According to the TV9 Hindi report, Dr Suman, an internal medicine specialist, said that if a person is healthy, drinking enough water and not dehydrated, taking ORS again and again does not offer any special benefit. He explained that ORS contains sugar, and unnecessary intake may increase blood sugar levels. It also contains salt, which can be harmful for people with high blood pressure if consumed in excess.

Doctors also warn that excessive ORS intake can disturb the body’s electrolyte balance. Electrolytes such as sodium and potassium are important for normal body function, but too much or too little of them can create health problems, particularly for people with kidney disease, hypertension, diabetes or heart related conditions. The TV9 report also notes that such people should not consume ORS without medical advice.

This does not mean ORS is unsafe. In the right situation, it can be extremely useful. It helps replace fluids and salts lost through loose motions, vomiting, heat exhaustion or heavy sweating. Medical guidance from CDC linked literature also underlines the role of oral rehydration solutions in replacing fluid and electrolyte losses during dehydration.

The concern begins when ORS is treated like a regular summer energy drink. Many people drink it daily assuming it will keep them stronger in the heat. Doctors say plain water, lemon water without excess sugar, coconut water, buttermilk and a balanced diet are usually enough for a healthy person in normal conditions.

Another important point is the difference between genuine ORS and commercial electrolyte drinks. The Indian Academy of Pediatrics has warned that electrolyte drinks should not be treated as a replacement for medical ORS, especially in children. ORS has a specific scientific composition, while many packaged drinks may contain added sugar or different ingredients.

Health experts advise people to drink ORS only when there are signs of dehydration, such as excessive thirst, dry mouth, dizziness, low urine output, fatigue, diarrhoea, vomiting or heat exhaustion. If symptoms are severe, medical help should be taken immediately.

The message is simple. ORS is a medical rehydration solution, not a daily refreshment. Used correctly, it can protect the body during dehydration. Used unnecessarily and repeatedly, it may create avoidable risks, especially for people with diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney disease or heart problems.
