Chennai: MS Dhoni’s future in the IPL has once again become the biggest talking point after emotional scenes unfolded at Chepauk following Chennai Super Kings’ match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 18.
Several videos and pictures from the stadium went viral after Dhoni was seen taking a lap around the ground with CSK players and support staff. The gesture immediately sparked speculation that the former India captain may have played his final IPL match at Chennai as a player. However, there has been no official confirmation from CSK or Dhoni on his retirement.
The scenes became more emotional when Dhoni met one of CSK’s most recognisable super fans, spoke to him, shook hands and hugged him. He was also seen surrounded by CSK players and embracing his long-time teammate Suresh Raina, whose arrival in Chennai before the match had already added to farewell rumours.
After the match, Dhoni also posed for a group photograph with the CSK squad at their home ground. The visuals, coming amid repeated questions over his IPL future, gave fans a strong sense of finality.
Former cricketers, too, added weight to the speculation. During commentary, Mohammad Kaif and R Ashwin reportedly suggested that Dhoni’s journey as an IPL player may have reached its end, while Harbhajan Singh said he does not think Dhoni will play further in the tournament. CSK’s head coach, however, maintained that any decision on Dhoni will be taken by the franchise management.
For now, Chepauk is waiting for one official word. Until then, every wave, hug and lap from Dhoni will be read as a possible goodbye.
