New Delhi: The impact of the ongoing conflict in West Asia is now being felt sharply in India, with petrol and diesel prices rising by ₹3 per litre, triggering fresh concerns over inflation and the rising cost of living.

Following the hike, petrol prices in Delhi climbed to ₹97.77 per litre, while diesel touched ₹90.67. Similar increases were reported across Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. The rise comes after global crude oil prices surged beyond $100 per barrel amid tensions involving Iran and disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil supply route.

The fuel price increase is expected to affect almost every sector, from transportation and agriculture to household expenses. Experts warn that higher diesel prices could increase freight charges, leading to costlier vegetables, fruits, ration items and other essentials. Public transport fares, including buses, autos and school vans, may also rise in the coming weeks.

The inflationary pressure has already started spreading beyond fuel. In recent days, CNG prices were raised by around ₹2 per kilogram in major cities, while milk prices by companies such as Amul and Mother Dairy also increased by ₹2 per litre. Commercial LPG cylinders have also become costlier.

Several citizens expressed concern over the growing burden on middle-class and lower-income families. Taxi drivers in Jaipur complained that app-based companies had not increased fares despite rising fuel costs, while residents in Mumbai said managing household expenses was becoming increasingly difficult.

Opposition leaders sharply criticised the Centre over the hike. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused the government of passing the burden of global tensions onto ordinary citizens, while Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav mocked the situation by saying “the bicycle is the only option left” amid soaring fuel prices.

Economists believe that if geopolitical tensions continue and crude oil prices remain elevated, India could witness further fuel price hikes in the coming months, adding more pressure on inflation and consumer spending.
