Kolkata: Trinamool Congress national general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee has landed in legal trouble after an FIR was registered against him over alleged inflammatory speeches made during the West Bengal Assembly election campaign.
The FIR was lodged at the Bidhannagar North Cyber Crime Police Station following a complaint filed by social activist Rajiv Sarkar. According to the complaint, Banerjee allegedly delivered provocative speeches at several campaign rallies, made controversial remarks linked to DJ music during processions, and issued statements targeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Police have reportedly registered the case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges related to promoting enmity between groups, inciting unrest and criminal intimidation. Sections of the Representation of the People Act linked to election campaigning and hate speech have also been invoked.
The complaint was initially submitted on May 5, a day after the Assembly election results were declared in West Bengal. The complainant also submitted links to several speeches allegedly made by Banerjee during the campaign period.
The development comes amid heightened political tension in the state following the BJP’s rise to power under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Political observers believe the FIR could further intensify the confrontation between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress in the coming days.
Banerjee, considered the second most influential leader in the Trinamool Congress after his aunt Mamata Banerjee, has not yet publicly responded to the FIR.
