Kolkata: The BJP-led government in West Bengal is preparing to take strict action against unaided and allegedly illegal madrasas across the state, triggering fresh political debate over religious freedom and law enforcement.

According to BJP MLA Sajal Ghosh, the proposed move is part of the party’s long-standing agenda and an official notification could be issued soon by the government headed by Suvendu Adhikari.

Speaking on the issue, Ghosh clarified that the action was not aimed at any particular community. “This is not a campaign against Muslims. We are not against madrasas, but all illegal institutions will be shut down,” he said, while arguing that such institutions do not contribute to professional education like engineering or medicine.

The controversy has intensified after BJP MLA Arjun Singh stated that the state government also plans to restrict public namaz on roads and open spaces. He claimed that directions regarding the issue were discussed during a Cabinet meeting and asserted that prayers should be conducted inside mosques rather than on public roads.

Singh further referred to Kolkata’s Red Road area, alleging that large public prayer gatherings during the previous government had disrupted Army training activities in the defence-controlled zone.

While no formal government notification has been released so far, the remarks by BJP leaders have already sparked sharp reactions across political circles. Opposition parties are expected to challenge the move, calling it an attack on constitutional and religious rights, while the BJP insists the action is focused on illegal institutions and maintaining public order.
