Moscow: Has the script for a coup in Moscow already been written? Amid the protracted four-year conflict with Ukraine and crippling Western economic sanctions, unprecedented murmurs of a rebellion against Russian President Vladimir Putin are surfacing from within his own inner circle.
The Kremlin is reportedly enveloped in an atmosphere of apprehension following a stark warning from Gennady Zyuganov, a prominent and historically loyal political figure. Thundering in the Russian parliament, Gennady cautioned that the nation is teetering on the edge of a coup, drawing chilling parallels to the devastating Russian Revolution of 1917.
Issuing a stern three-point warning, Gennady stated, “If policies are not changed immediately, economic collapse will lead the country to the same chaos that happened 100 years ago.” While carefully avoiding a direct assault on Putin, he fiercely criticised the government, the central bank, and the ruling party. “We are supporting Putin, but the government is not listening to us,” he added, noting that the President’s approval ratings have plunged to a seven-year low, sounding alarm bells across the Kremlin.
The root of this domestic unrest is the battered Russian economy. Global sanctions have severely restricted oil and gas revenues, slashed Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), and created critical shortages in high-tech equipment and machinery.
Although Moscow has pivoted its trade towards China and India, the economic strain remains immense.
Russian oligarchs and elites are increasingly anxious, focusing on shielding their wealth from international sanctions. For the first time in decades, Putin’s close allies appear to be distancing themselves, acknowledging the Kremlin’s fragile state. However, experts caution that Putin remains a formidable leader who has weathered severe challenges before, making any potential coup an uphill battle for his detractors.
