Dhaka: In a significant move signalling a shift from the interim government’s policies, Bangladesh’s new prime minister, Tarique Rahman, has begun overturning several decisions made during Muhammad Yunus’s tenure.

On Monday, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed issued orders for a thorough review of cases filed after August 5, 2024, aiming to prevent harassment of innocents.

According to reports from Dhaka Tribune, Ahmed held a three-hour meeting with heads of directorates and law enforcement agencies. He instructed police to re-examine complaints lodged following the student-led uprising that toppled the Awami League government, ensuring no undue persecution. “After August 5, 2024, some individuals targeted businessmen, journalists, and others from various professions for personal gains,” Ahmed stated. “Police must reinvestigate these and submit reports to the government to uphold the rule of law.”

Emphasising zero tolerance for vigilante actions, the minister declared, “Mob justice will not be tolerated under any circumstances. The era of blocking national highways or enforcing demands through violence is over. Grievances must now be addressed via legal and institutional channels.”

Reflecting on the previous regime’s influence, Ahmed noted that political interference had severely hampered the police force. He underscored law enforcement’s pivotal role in maintaining social order, reiterating the government’s commitment to implementing recommendations from the police reform commission.

On improving the force’s reputation, Ahmed added, “For many, the home ministry equates to the police. They must become the people’s friend and mend their tarnished image. We aim for a fully corruption-free ministry with accountability and transparency at every level. Any member found in criminal activities will face immediate action post-investigation.”
