New Delhi: An old video of US President Donald Trump praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi while jokingly remarking that he does not wish to “destroy” or “ruin” his political career has resurfaced on social media, triggering fresh debate and drawing a measured response from India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

The clip, originally from October 15, 2025, shows Trump speaking to reporters at the White House amid discussions on US-India ties, including tensions over India’s Russian oil purchases. Trump described PM Modi as a “great man” and a “time-tested leader”, adding, “He loves Trump… I don’t want you to take the word ‘love’ any differently. I don’t want to destroy his political career.” Delivered in his characteristic humorous style, the comment came while Trump highlighted India’s energy needs for its 140 crore citizens and boasted about bilateral relations.

The video gained traction again in February 2026, with some interpreting it as a veiled threat, though reports clarify it was light-hearted praise amid improving ties post a trade deal.

Responding during the weekly press briefing on February 12, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “I have not seen the video… However, if such a video exists, whether it is true or false, we will take the right action on it.” The MEA emphasised verification before any steps, underscoring India’s cautious diplomatic stance.

The episode highlights how old remarks can spark renewed scrutiny in the digital age, even as India-US relations continue to strengthen on trade and strategic fronts. No further reactions from political parties were reported.
