New Delhi: In the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision on Monday to stay the Delhi High Court’s order that had granted bail to former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the high-profile Unnao rape case, his daughter Aishwarya Sengar expressed deep frustration and disappointment, alleging that her family was denied a fair hearing in the top court.
The Supreme Court bench, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, put a hold on the High Court’s suspension of Sengar’s life sentence, emphasising that critical legal questions remain unresolved and directing Sengar’s legal team to respond to the CBI’s appeal within a set timeframe. The apex court’s intervention means Sengar will remain in custody as proceedings continue.
Reacting to the apex court’s ruling, Aishwarya Sengar critiqued the judicial process, alleging that her family’s side was not adequately heard. She claimed inconsistencies in the survivor’s statements and asserted that material evidence, including medical reports and call records, supported her father’s defence — an assertion that has been strongly contested in the public discourse.
Her statements underscored the emotional toll on the family, with Aishwarya saying they had been deprived of their dignity, peace and “fundamental right to be heard”. She also urged the media not to circulate what she described as “misleading information”.
The 2017 Unnao rape case — in which Sengar was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment — has remained a flashpoint in national debates around justice, political influence, and institutional trust. Critics have stressed the importance of an impartial legal process, while supporters of the survivor have welcomed the Supreme Court’s move to uphold judicial scrutiny.
The legal battle is expected to unfold further as both sides prepare for additional hearings in the coming weeks.
