New Delhi: The Indian Army has significantly bolstered its operational capabilities with the induction of the Kalyani M4 into its Northern Command fleet. Manufactured indigenously by defence major Bharat Forge, this Quick Reaction Fighting Vehicle stands as a formidable fortress on wheels. It outperforms conventional luxury off roaders like the Land Rover Defender in both sheer power and combat resilience.
Weighing approximately sixteen tons, the Kalyani M4 is engineered to navigate the most challenging Indian terrains, from the freezing heights of Ladakh to vast desert landscapes. Its primary objective is to transport fully armed soldiers safely to active combat zones under extreme weather conditions. The spacious interior accommodates ten personnel, including the driver and commander, ensuring optimal comfort with a robust air conditioning system and advanced filters designed to neutralise chemical or toxic gas attacks.
Unmatched in its defensive capabilities, the vehicle provides absolute blast protection. The Kalyani M4 features a unique V shaped hull that can withstand a ten kilogram landmine explosion under its tyres, effectively deflecting the lethal blast impact away from the cabin. Furthermore, its completely bulletproof body and reinforced glass can endure a massive fifty kilogram TNT or improvised explosive device blast from the side. Soldiers inside remain completely protected against heavy sniper rounds and rifle fire.
Under the hood, this military beast houses a colossal 465 horsepower turbo diesel engine. Generating a staggering 1627 Nm of torque, its power output is nearly four times that of popular luxury civilian vehicles. Despite its massive weight, the Kalyani M4 can achieve a remarkable top speed of 140 kilometres per hour and boasts an impressive travel range of eight hundred kilometres on a single tank of fuel.
To enhance offensive operations, the roof of the vehicle can be equipped with heavy machine guns or anti tank missiles, allowing troops to engage adversaries aggressively from the safety of the cabin. The strategic deployment of the Kalyani M4 not only highlights the growing self reliance of India in defence manufacturing but also ensures that the armed forces remain equipped with world class technology to safeguard the national borders.
