Islamabad: In a shocking escalation of tensions in Pakistan, Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan, sisters of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, were subjected to harsh treatment outside Adiala Jail late Monday night.
Protesting for their brother’s release, the siblings were doused with chemical-laced water by authorities at midnight, an act condemned as inhumane by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters.
The incident has ignited outrage, further deepening Pakistan’s political crisis.
The sisters, vocal advocates for Imran Khan’s freedom since his incarceration in August 2023, were among PTI workers demanding access to the former premier. Eyewitnesses claim police used water cannons mixed with irritants to disperse the crowd, leaving Aleema and Uzma drenched and distressed.
PTI leaders slammed the action as a deliberate attack on women, with social media amplifying videos of the chaotic scene.
Imran Khan, who faces multiple charges, including corruption and incitement, remains a polarising figure. His supporters allege the government is using heavy-handed tactics to silence dissent.
The Adiala Jail episode follows reports of tightened restrictions on Khan’s visitors, fuelled by claims of political vendetta. Human rights groups have called for an investigation into the incident, urging respect for peaceful protest.
As Pakistan grapples with economic woes and political unrest, the treatment of Khan’s sisters risks escalating tensions. PTI has vowed to intensify protests, while the government defends its actions as necessary for public order.
The incident underscores the fragile state of democracy in Pakistan, with global eyes watching.
