New Delhi: A wedding procession in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, turned into a tale of heartbreak and disbelief when the groom returned home without his bride, following a shocking revelation.
The couple, who met and fell in love on Instagram, had planned their marriage with great enthusiasm, culminating in a grand barat on Wednesday. However, the dream wedding unravelled when the bride’s family called off the ceremony at the last moment, leaving the groom and his family stunned.
Hailing from a village in Saharanpur, the groom, a 26-year-old shopkeeper, had connected with the bride, a 23-year-old from a nearby town, through social media two years ago.
Their virtual romance blossomed into a commitment, and both families agreed to the match. The groom’s family, brimming with joy, set out with a 50-member procession, complete with music and festivities, to the bride’s home. But upon arrival, they were met with chaos. The bride’s family alleged discrepancies in the groom’s financial status, claiming he misrepresented his income, a charge the groom’s kin vehemently denied.
Tempers flared, and after heated arguments, the bride’s family refused to proceed with the marriage. The groom’s party, humiliated and heartbroken, returned empty-handed. “We were blindsided; everything was settled,” the groom’s brother told local media.
Police were called to mediate but reported no formal complaint. The incident has sparked debates about trust in online relationships and the pressures of social expectations in marriages.
