PM Modi Receives Warm Welcome In Ghana On First Bilateral Visit

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Ghana on Wednesday on a two-day bilateral visit. Members of the Indian diaspora welcomed him with “bhajans and slogans” at the hotel he is staying at. The Indian community warmly welcomed the Prime Minister on his first official visit to the West African nation. Modi, who was invited by Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, was also received by a group of children who waved at him and sang, “Hare Rama, Hare Krishna.” The Prime Minister was touched by their gesture and shook hands with them, even lifting one child into the air to their parent’s delight.

India is home to a sizeable diaspora in Ghana, consisting of over 15,000 individuals. There is a very long history of Indian migration to Africa, with some families having been in the country for three or four generations. In recent times, several Ghanaian-Indians have taken up citizenship in the country but still have a strong attachment to India. Many Indians have found employment with multinational companies in Ghana or with major local firms. Professionals and technicians often employ Indians in the country.

As part of the cultural welcome, Ghanaian artists also performed the popular Indian song Jai Ho on drums and local instruments. Modi is said to have thoroughly enjoyed it, even taking some time to speak with the local artists.

At around 2.30pm, Modi was received by President Mahama, who personally welcomed him at Kotoka International Airport in Accra. The two leaders held a brief talk at the airport’s Jubilee Lounge. Prime Minister Narendra Modi received an official welcome from President Mahama at Kotoka International Airport.

 

Modi’s Ghana visit is the first stop in his five-nation tour of Africa, which will be followed by Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia. Mahama organised the Prime Minister’s trip to Ghana upon his invitation.

The two leaders, on Wednesday, will hold delegation-level talks in Accra. They will review bilateral relations and the best ways in which the two countries can advance their cooperation. A one-to-one meeting between Modi and Mahama will follow, culminating in a state dinner.

On Thursday, the Prime Minister will address Ghana’s Parliament. He will also meet with the Indian community in Accra.
