New Delhi: Many Indian states are reeling under a severe heatwave, witnessing all-time high temperatures and breaking normal life. Heatwave alerts have been sent across Jharkhand, Karnataka, West Bengal, Odisha, and Maharashtra, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) asking residents to stay alert. Here is how the currently prevailing heatwave conditions are in these states and some effective measures to remain safe from extreme heat.

Heatwave hits Jharkhand hard

Many districts of Jharkhand are in the grip of a heatwave, with mercury above 40 degrees Celsius.

In fact, Chaibasa toasted at 41°C, blistering 7.6°C from normal.

Seraikela-Kharsawan, East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum, Dhanbad, and Bokaro have all received yellow alerts.

However, rain and possibly thunderstorms after 19 March should provide some welcome relief from the heat.

Karnataka Faces Extreme Heat

With the northern half of Karnataka recording all-time high temperatures, the situation in the state is getting more and more dire.

Ainapur Hobli in Kalaburagi was the hottest place in the state with a high of 42.8°C.

We predict even more temperature increases from March 15 to 17.

The IMD has also declared a heat wave, in view of which they requested people to take measures throughout 18 and 19 March.

Heatwave continues to sweep West Bengal

Western parts of West Bengal are witnessing rising heatwave conditions.

The maximum temperature has hovered around 40°C in West Medinipur, Jhargram, Bankura, West Bardhaman, and Birbhum.

Kolkata maximum 34.1°C—5°C above seasonal average

This heatwave duration is likely to continue till 18 March, and some respite from heatwave conditions along with chances of rain is indicated after 20 March.

Severe Heatwave Situation in Odisha

Many areas in Odisha are now reeling under searing heat.

With 41.8 degrees Celsius, Jharsuguda is at the top of the list in the state.

Temperatures crossed 40° Celsius in Sambalpur, Mayurbhanj, Angul, Bolangir, and Titlagarh.

Cyclone Bindu is expected to bring heavy rain for a few days, so temperatures could drop in some parts of the state after a few days of extreme heat, but IMD officials said the heat is likely to continue in most parts and requested residents to take precautionary measures.

Records for October hit the Vidarbha Region of Maharashtra

One of the worst affected regions in the heatwave is Vidarbha in Maharashtra.

Chandrapur was one of the hottest places in India at 41.4°C.

Halapur, Brahmapuri, Solapur, and Wardha also witnessed the mercury shoot over 41 degrees on Saturday.

With the heat so stupidly intense and no respite, the absence of humidity is only making things worse.
