A Leader Remembered: Political Figures Pay Homage To Manmohan Singh

NewDelhi: The former Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh, passed away on December 26, 2024, at the age of 92, after being admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi for respiratory problems. His death stood out as a sad event that sparked a wave of condolences from different political leaders of India, departing his memory of significant achievements to the nation.

At the same time, the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, expressed deep grief over Singh’s demise, commenting that “The departure of Dr. Manmohan Singh has inflicted terrible pain on us.” Partitioning of India and going on to be successful in every area is definitely no trivial matter. He will forever be known for his noble spirit and his status as a renowned economist.” Modi mentioned that Singh’s story was a real-life rags-to-riches story that everybody in India respects.

The President, Droupadi Murmu, acknowledged Singh as a politician and economist who positively contributed to the Indian economy. She went on to say, “His going away is something we all lose.”

The former Minister of Union, Sharad Pawar, remembered Singh as an architect of the recovery during a period of financial hardship. Singh’s tenure was marked by the close friendship that he grew with Singh when the latter was the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. “He took the helm of the government while the country was at a critical level of the economy,” Pawar pointed out.

In view of Singh’s death, the Indian government has moved to declare seven days of national mourning, throughout which all the scheduled government programs have been cancelled. The Cabinet met on December 27 to honour Singh, where various ministers shared their memories and respects for his legacy.

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi also hit on Singh’s corner, visiting Singh’s home to declare their respect. Rahul Gandhi pointed out that Singh’s role in the Indian economic transformation would always be remembered.

Singh’s death news was well received by the public and the politicians. The Deputy CM of Uttar Pradesh, Keshav Prasad Maurya, termed it a “huge loss for the country,” observing that during Singh’s tenure as Finance Minister, he marked the start of the economic changes.

Asaduddin Owaisi hailed Singh’s journey that went from being a refugee of the partition to being a prime minister, recognised his countermeasures against minority suppression, and expressed his sorrow to the deceased family.

 

Manmohan Singh’s corpse was brought back to his dwelling after his demise, promoting at AIIMS. The last rites with the full state honours and grave retribution are to be done at Rajghat on December 28, 2024. For the sake of Singh’s legacy, the Congress party has announced the discontinuation of all its activities for a week.
