NewDelhi: Justin Trudeau is, under pressure as the Prime Minister due to tough times leading up to the next elections in his country. The recent unrest started with the departure of Kristia Freeland, who served as Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister on Monday. This move has led to discussions about how it might impact Trudeaus position, as the leader.
Freelands sudden resignation came as a surprise since she was supposed to deliver the governments update on the same day it happened. Reports indicate that there was friction, between Trudeau and Freeland when he mentioned his plan to reassign her from the finance position to another role in the cabinet instead. Despite being offered a position, within the government Freeland turned it down. Concluded that stepping down was her best course of action.
Kristia Freeland was born in Peace River in 1968. Has taken up roles in journalism and politics throughout her career path so far. After completing her studies at Harvard University and obtaining a masters degree, in Slavic Studies from Oxford University; she made the move from journalism to politics back in 2013 by winning a position in the House of Commons as a representative of Toronto Centre, for the Liberal Party. In 2015 she became a part of Trudeaus cabinet, as the Minister of International Trade. Was later named Deputy Prime Minister in 2019. A position that had been empty since 2006. Before becoming Finance Minister in 2020.
In her resignation letter, to Trudeau Freeland mentioned that he had informed her Friday of her removal from the finance role. The Prime Ministers offer for a position lacked clarity not outlining her duties explicitly. In her letter to him Freeland expressed that Trudeaus actions suggested doubts about her competence, in maintaining her role prompting her to see resignation as the course of action.
The aftermath of Freeland stepping down has led to increased examination of Trudeaus government, by the opposition party who are now using this chance to critique how both domestic and global matters are being managed by the administration There are demands for Trudeau to step down from backers of the Khalistan movement who have aligned with Freeland.
With the political situation, in Canada becoming more volatile by the day¸ doubts have arisen about Trudeaus leadership skills and his capacity to steer the country through these growing obstacles. Freelands exit signifies a juncture in politics and sparks worries about the stability of Trudeaus administration and the path ahead, for the Liberal Party.
