Shinde Government Shakes Up Police Over School Scandal in Badlapur

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has taken prompt action following an incident of misconduct involving two girls at a school in Badlapur, Maharashtra. The Eknath Shinde-led administration has suspended three police officers, including a senior police inspector, for allegedly neglecting their duties in this case. The suspensions come amid growing public outrage in Badlapur, where large-scale protests have been held.

Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis, providing updates on the matter via social media platform X, announced, “An order has been issued to immediately suspend the senior police inspector, assistant sub-inspector, and head constable for failing to fulfil their duties.”

In response to the incident, the state government has already established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine the case. Earlier this week, Fadnavis instructed the Thane Police Commissioner to propose fast-tracking the case in court.

“The incident in Badlapur is extremely serious, and I unequivocally condemn it. The state government has formed an SIT led by a woman officer of IG rank to investigate the case. Efforts are underway to move the case to a fast-track court so that the victim’s family receives swift justice,” Fadnavis stated.

The issue has also sparked political debate, with opposition parties in Maharashtra criticising the government’s handling of the situation. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray lashed out, remarking, “Incidents like this should not occur anywhere in the country, not just in Badlapur. We were on the verge of passing the Shakti Bill, but our government was toppled. Those currently in power bear the responsibility to pass this Bill and enforce the strictest measures.”

Thackeray further added, “I’ve heard that the school involved is linked to BJP members. However, I don’t wish to politicise the matter—those guilty, whether BJP members or anyone else, must face strict action.”

The case continues to draw significant attention as both the public and political parties demand accountability and swift justice.
