Heavy Rains in Uttarakhand: Landslides, Rising River Levels, and Stranded Pilgrims

Dehradun: Following severe rainfall in Kerala, heavy rains have now struck Uttarakhand, causing significant disruption and raising concerns of potential flooding and landslides. The relentless downpour has particularly impacted the Kedarnath region, where reports have emerged of stones falling between Bhim Bali and Lincholi, exacerbating the already hazardous conditions.

The water levels of the Mandakini River in Gaurikund and the Sonprayag River have risen alarmingly. As a precautionary measure, authorities have evacuated markets and hotels in affected areas, with a focus on ensuring the safety of residents and pilgrims. Buildings along the riverbanks have been cleared, and local administration is closely monitoring the situation.

The inclement weather has left around 200 pilgrims stranded in Kedarnath Dham. Rainfall in Kedarnath and the broader Rudraprayag district has made the Kedarnath highway perilous, prompting officials to halt the pilgrimage and secure pilgrims in safe locations. The District Magistrate of Rudraprayag has officially suspended the yatra, citing the flood-like conditions.

In response, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed along the Mandakini River to provide assistance and ensure the safety of those in affected areas. Residents of Gaurikund have been advised to stay alert as the region braces for more rain. The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall over the next two days, which could further exacerbate the situation.

In addition to the challenges in Kedarnath, the water level of the Bhagirathi River in Gangotri Dham has risen once again. Although the river’s waters have not yet reached the ghats, the increased levels pose a potential threat to local populations.

The heavy rains have also caused widespread power outages in areas including Sonprayag and Gaurikund, adding to the difficulties faced by the people staying there. The state government has urged everyone in the affected regions to exercise caution and follow the instructions of local authorities.

With the situation evolving, the authorities remain vigilant and prepared to respond to any emergencies. The priority remains the safety and well-being of both residents and visitors in this sacred and mountainous region.
