India Has World’s Largest Diaspora, Says United Nations

United Nations: With almost 18 million people born there now living abroad, India has the largest diaspora in the world, according to UN’s Population Division director at the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, John Wilmoth.

Wilmoth said this while presenting the International Migration Report 2020 on Friday. He also said that the US was the top host country for migrants with 51 million of them or 18 per cent of the world’s total residing there, reported news agency IANS.

According to the report, the size of the migrant population abroad increased for nearly all countries and areas of the world between 2000 and 2020. With India witnessing the largest gain of nearly 10 million during the period, leaped from the third place in 2000 to the top spot in 2020.

“The Indian diaspora is one of the most vibrant dynamic world… It’s present in all continents, in all regions,” UN’s Population Affairs Officer Clare Menozzi said while explaining the phenomenon of the migration from India.

The Indian diaspora is diverse, “comprised predominantly of persons who are workers but also students, and people who have moved for family reasons,” she was quoted as saying in the report.
