Mumbai: Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami was on Wednesday arrested by Alibaug police on charges of abetting the suicide of Anvay Naik in 2018.
Family members of the 53-year-old interior designer claimed that non-payment of dues by Republic TV had driven Naik to suicide.
“We are happy with Arnab Goswami’s arrest. There was a lot of pressure from the police earlier to close the case. Arnab was asked to return the money… but he didn’t meet our father,” The Indian Express quoted Naik’s daughter Adnya as saying.
“We do not want to make the issue political. I have lost two family members (father and grandmother) due to this issue. We want people to understand how powerful people like Arnab Goswami get away with such things. The arrest should have been made much earlier,” she added.
Making a reference to Republic TV’s coverage of the Sushant Singh Rajput case, Naik’s wife said that no arrests were made despite her husband leaving behind a suicide note naming Goswami and two others. “Arnab Goswami kept saying arrests should be made in the Sushant Singh Rajput suicide case where there was no suicide note. My husband left behind a suicide note naming Arnab and two others, yet no arrests were made. How is this fair?” she argued.
Naik and his mother Kumud Naik were found dead at their bungalow in Alibaug two years ago.
