New Delhi: Eminent boxer Dingko Singh has tested positive for novel coronavirus in his home state Manipur.
The Asian Games gold-medallist had recently been airlifted from Imphal to New Delhi so that he could continue his cancer treatment, following a media report highlighting his crisis. He then undertook a 2,400 km journey by road to return home from the Indian Capital.
“I was ready to go home from the quarantine centre, but they informed me I had tested positive. So I am back at the hospital,” Dingko told the Times of India.
Dingko, who had a relapse of liver cancer, was scheduled to travel to Delhi for radiotherapy treatment around March. But the process got delayed due to the nationwide lockdown, announced on March 25 to curb the spread of Covid-19.
The bantamweight boxer, who clinched gold medal at the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games, is the first high-profile Indian sportsperson to have tested positive for the virus.
