Kapurthala: A kabaddi player was killed and his friend critically injured in Kapurthala district on Thursday night when a policeman fired at them, fearing they would attack him for stopping their car during curfew hours amid the coronavirus-induced lockdown.
Arwinderjit Singh, who represented the country in kabaddi meets, was the unfortunate victim, while Pardeep Singh was the injured person. Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Paramjit Singh was the guilty cop and has been arrested.
According to police officials, the ASI was on way to dropping a friend in his village around 10 pm when another vehicle was approaching them.
Since it was curfew hours, the ASI’s car followed the other vehicle car and signalled them to stop. A few minutes later, the ASI fired four to five rounds from his service revolver at the duo. According to police, the 24-year-old Arwinderjit died on the spot while his friend was admitted to a hospital in Jalandhar but was reported to be out of danger.
Police believe the unfortunate incident was the result of confusion and that the ASI fired in self-defence, thinking the two people will attack them.
