6th Monkeypox Case Reported In Delhi

New Delhi: A woman of African origin has tested positive for monkeypox and has been admitted to LNJP Hospital, the nodal hospital for monkeypox cases in the nation’s Capital.

This is the sixth monkeypox case reported in Delhi, taking the tally in India to 11. The other five were in Kerala.

According to LNJP medical director Suresh Kumar, the 22-year-old woman, a resident of west Delhi, was admitted to the hospital on Friday and her reports returned positive on Saturday.

“The earlier five (monkeypox) patients have been discharged,” informed Kumar.

The last person to be infected with the disease was another 22-year-old woman, also of African origin, on August 13.

Monkeypox is a viral disease transmitted to humans from animals with symptoms similar to those in smallpox patients.

Over 50,000 people have contracted the virus across 80-plus countries in the last 10 months. The World Health Organization declared it a public health emergency in July.
