Hyderabad: A heart wrenching video of a woman from Hyderabad, pleading for urgent rescue from Oman after enduring severe exploitation and massive job fraud, has sparked widespread outrage across social media. Identified as Shabnam Begum from the Pahadi Shareef area, the victim is currently seeking refuge at the Indian Embassy in Muscat after bravely escaping her abusive employer.
According to her distressed family, Shabnam travelled to the Gulf nation earlier this year on March 26. A local recruitment agent had falsely promised her a decent position as a housemaid, offering a monthly salary of 200 Omani Riyals. Lured by the prospect of providing financial stability for her family, she accepted the overseas offer, completely unaware of the grim reality that awaited her in a foreign land.
Upon arriving in Muscat, her situation quickly spiralled into an absolute nightmare. Instead of the promised single household job, her sponsor forcefully made her work across multiple houses for gruelling 12 to 15 hour shifts every single day. In her desperate viral video, Shabnam broke down while alleging that she was systematically denied adequate food, basic accommodation, and was not paid a single rupee of her salary for four consecutive months. Unable to withstand the continuous physical exhaustion and mental harassment, she managed to escape the captivity of her employer and immediately approached the Indian diplomatic mission for shelter and protection.
Following the massive circulation of her distressing video, her family and local community leaders have aggressively urged the central government to intervene. They have submitted a formal appeal to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, requesting immediate diplomatic action to ensure her utmost safety and swift repatriation to India. Furthermore, they are demanding strict legal action and heavy penalties against the fraudulent local travel agent who allegedly trapped her in this international exploitation racket.
This alarming incident once again highlights the severe vulnerabilities faced by blue collar migrant workers who rely on unverified agents for Gulf country employment. As the higher authorities evaluate the sensitive situation, the immediate priority remains the safe and speedy return of Shabnam Begum to her anxious family in Hyderabad.
